During our prototyping stage, many hours were spent listening to the amplifiers and pre-amplifiers to ensure the highest sonic performance was being delivered. We also needed to be certain that what we were experiencing was not just a fabric of our over-enthusiasm and unintended bias due to us being so close to the product development. So, periodically we either invited guests over to listen to the equipment for themselves, or brought the equipment to them so they could listen to it in their own familiar environment. Here then is some of the feedback we received. Keep in mind our units were still in prototype stage and most of the wiring was done with alligator clips and lamp cord. In addition, we initially demonstrated the amplifier and pre-amplifier using a pair of $50 speakers we picked up at a local discount store. We wanted to emphasize how much impact our amplifier and/or pre-amplifier has on even the cheapest set of loudspeakers. This unintentionally turned out to be the most revealing demonstration of all.
"I'm hearing sounds in this room I've never heard before."
"I see what you mean when you say ZUS blows B****** out of the water."
"I came home to my Tetra speakers, but with a M******* Vacuum Tube Amplifier that is simply not as good as ZUS. Put me down for a couple units from the first run of the production line."
"Hi Russ, I remembered the first time that I listened to your ZUS prototype which is probably 4-5 years ago. At the time, my feeling was that for such a small system, the sound was very impressive. Especially, at the time, it was a prototype and the look of the system was really marginal. After all that time, when I heard your system again, it was quite a quantum leap from your first prototype. I started listening to your system hooked to your small $50 speaker with very cheap wire. If you blind folded me then and told me that I was listening to a pair $1,000 dollar speakers, I would have believed you. Then the real listening began when your ZUS amplifier was hooked up to my Wadia CD player and my ProAc Response 3 speakers using my Transparent cable for the speaker. The effect was amazing, especially on the sound stage. From a sound quality standpoint, I think my $10,000 J***** Vacuum Tube Amplifier can somehow match it (of course this is very subjective). However, as from a sound stage standpoint, ZUS was much better. The separation of different instruments is great, the depth of the sound feels like more than double of what my J***** system can do. The vocals sounded very “real” but still a little bit harsh, However, my J***** system has basically the same issue. Later on when you hooked up the PS Audio UltraLink D/A converter to the CD player, the vocal sound much more pleasing and rounded. That tells me both our systems are OK and the key was with the D/A converter. I also liked the sound of the piano; it was very “Hi-Fi”. I understand that there are 2 types of sound that is very difficult for an audio system to reproduce. One is applause (clapping) and the other is piano. I listened later to a track that contains applause. It sounded very “real” but I still think the piano sounded better! Later on, my wife told me that she was impressed by two things. First of all, she was upstairs and she heard a male vocalist singing. She asked me who the singer was but I forgot. Anyway, her comment was that it was very nice. She also listened to a piece from a Chinese orchestra which she likes. Later on, she told me that she could really feel that there was a whole orchestra in front of her where as in the past that she never heard that, no matter how I tried to guide her to the listening of the music. Probably I was still busy in terms of catching up with my work, so I had not hooked up my J***** system after you left. I think the major reason is that I will probably not listen to it for a while until I get your ZUS unit. In the past, I was told, and I kind of agreed, that the speakers were the most important element of a Hi-Fi system. If I was going to spend $10,000 on the system, probably, I would spend $4,000 - $5,000 on the speaker and the rest on the amplifier and the source. After listening to ZUS, I changed my mind. I now believe that the amplifier is the most important ingredient in the whole system."
